Corporation to sponsor student photographic awards

As part of its continuing sponsorship of the Picture Editors' Awards, theCorporation of London is to fund a National Student Awards scheme forstudents planning a career in photographic journalism.

The Awards will be organised by the Picture Editors' Guild, and will becomepart of the annual Picture Editors' Awards, which recognise and reward thebest of press photography.

Judith Mayhew, Chairman of the Policy & Resources Committee said: "The Corporation has been an active supporter of the Picture Editors' Awards since they were founded nine years ago; although the City's interest inpromoting excellence through education goes much further back. Some of London's craft Guilds date back more than 1,000 years. It is entirely appropriate that we should join this initiative to support tomorrow's photojournalists."

Full details of the new awards scheme, which will include substantial cash bursaries and work experience opportunities, will be announced at the Picture Editors' Awards ceremony at Guildhall on Monday, February 12, 2001.
