Press photo exhibition chronicles eight decades of news

An exhibition spanning more than eight decades of local press photography goes on show next month.

The work, by photographers from The Sentinel in Stoke-on-Trent, captures stories from the Potteries dating back to the early 20th century.

Entitled Dear Happy Ghosts, the exhibition features 120 large photographs and 100 smaller images, many of which have not been seen by the public for generations as they are not available for viewing via The Sentinel's digital archives.

The images were chosen by Sentinel picture editor Martin Elliott and long-serving photographer Steve Bould.

Martin said: "This is an exciting opportunity for the public to view some of the archetypal images which have helped convey The Sentinel's coverage of events which have shaped the history of the Potteries over the last 80 or so years.

"It is a socio-documentary covering not only international events such as the affects of war but a record of the everyday lives of the men and women of the area in the true tradition of regional photojournalism."

The showcase will be officially opened by the former Guardian picture editor Eamonn McCabe.

It runs for three months from June 28 at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, in Stoke-on-Trent.
