Showtime gets the BIG picture

A big theatrical event was given the big treatment by the Southern Daily Echo's picture desk.

More than 600 Guides, Brownies and adults took part in The Magic of Showtime at Southampton's Mayflower Theatre - and the paper carried a picture of the entire cast.

The landscape shot was used vertically over 17.5cms x 36cms in a two-page colour spread. And though the result was not perfect technically, there was no doubting its pulling power for readers.

Several hundred copies of the paper were sold at the theatre on one night alone and picture editor Paul Collins is hoping to reap the rewards in photo sales.

Organisers of the show arranged the line-up in rows of up to 30 and freelance photographer Dave Lolly took the picture. Not surprisingly, a little technical wizardy was required before the paper was published.

"Because the lighting in the hall was fading off at the back, we had to go into Photoshop and lighten up the rear of it so that we balanced it up a bit better," Mr Collins said.
