Siege picture wins top award

The moment when Alan Kiloh surrendered to armed police after a six-hour siege

Aberdeen photographer Nick Anderson has won a top award with this dramatic shot of a man surrendering to armed police after holding his former wife hostage for six hours.

But Nick, of the Evening Express, has revealed how close he came to missing the moment - because it was taken with the last frame on his roll of film.

He explained: "I was taking photographs throughout the day and hadn't really checked the numbers on my film.

"By the time the guy walked out, I pushed the button and ran out of film. It was a horrible feeling.

"Luckily enough, it was the right photo, but I was a bit scared when I was processing the film."

Nick, 56, who has worked at the paper for more than 30 years, won Best News Picture of 1999 in the Bell's Press Photography Awards - beating entries from national newspapers and freelances from all over Scotland.

It is Nick's first award, and it was only the second competition he has ever entered.

Evening Express editor Donald Martin said: "I am delighted for Nick who has been an outstanding asset to the Evening Express for more than 30 years."

Kiloh was sentenced to three years in jail following the siege last October when he threatened to kill his former wife and held an air pistol in her mouth.
