Law of the subs' desk revealed

A letter in the Evening Herald, Plymouth, shows that there are some sharp-eyed readers out there.

Mike Rose wrote to say that the badge on the policeman's cap in a front-page picture of new uniform was upside down in one edition but the right way up in a later one.

"Full marks to the person who noticed this mistake in the photo, but how did you manage to correct it?" he asked.

Editor Rachael Campey explained in a footnote: "The wonders of technology, Mr Rose! As you say, we spotted it in time for later editions and we were able to make the correction with a trick of technical wizardry.

"We were hoping no-one else would notice!"
