New jobs created as publisher launches title

Up to six new jobs – three in editorial – could be created by a south east media company expanding its portfolio of newspaper titles.

KOS Media has just launched two new editions of its 'Your' midweek free newspaper series for the East Kent towns of Deal and Sandwich.

And from this Saturday its rebranded and revamped Kent on Saturday will be available, replacing the outgoing Kentish Saturday Observer which published its final edition at the weekend.

Managing director Paul Stannard said the new paper would have larger sections and more of its own editorial content instead of sharing with its sister Kent on Sunday title.

"The new one is going to have a much bigger sports section compared with the Kentish Saturday Observer," he told HTFP.

"This is a complete change. It will be a paper in its own right and the two Review magazines will have different content as well.

"Before they were pretty much the same apart from the front page and page three interview.

"Kent on Saturday will have more pages and Kent on Sunday will be getting bigger too. We will be doing more supplements, more often.

"In two of the last four weeks we've carried the biggest papers that we have in the past two years."

The number of copies of Kent on Saturday produced is expected to be significantly higher than that of the Kentish Saturday Observer and it will be distributed through local shops.

Paul believes that strong loyalty from readers and the fact it is a young, independent company is enabling KOS Media to swim against the regional press tide of resource cutting.

He added: "We started six years ago with a blank canvas. We don't have a historical pedigree to get through.

"Our people are very much 'What's next?'. I don't have a building full of negative people but people who see opportunity."

KOS Media also publishes 'Your' titles covering Ashford, Canterbury, Dover, Maidstone, Medway, Shepway, Swale and Thanet, yourkenttv.co.uk which features videos uploaded by the public and Visit Kent Magazines.

Amazing what you can do when you're not encumbered by vast debts, overpaid layers of bureaucratic managers, loss-making TV and radio stations etc. Good luck to them.
