Trauma reporting under conference spotlight

A conference focusing on how journalists deal with traumatic situations is being held next month.

The event is the culmination of a joint research project between Bournemouth University and The Dart Centre for Journalism and Trauma, in London.

The Dart Centre is a specialist global network of journalists, journalism educators and health professionals dedicated to improving media coverage of trauma, conflict and tragedy.

The Centre also addresses the consequences of such coverage for those working in journalism.

Their research with Bournemouth University has looked into how journalists and filmmakers in the UK are, and should be, trained to deal with sensitive and potentially traumatic material.

The conference brings together leading journalists, educators and psychology professionals.

Presentations will consider how journalists and programme makers might be trained to handle the reporting and portrayal of trauma.

Other sessions will consider what journalists can learn from the advanced interviewing skills that are second nature to workers in the trauma field.

Anyone interested in attending the conference should e-mail info@emotionsandjournalism.org. It is being held on January 10 at City University, 106 Bunhill Row, London, from 9am to 5pm.
