News editor tells of runaway truck scare

Rochdale Observer news editor Jeni Harvey came close to making front page news when she stepped out of a shop as a runaway truck hurtled past.

While the only harm done was to some bollards, the accident has left former Middleton Guardian reporter Jeni counting her lucky stars.

She said: "I was leaving the newspaper shop when I saw this truck hurtling down the hill.

"There were workmen trying to run alongside trying desperately to jump inside to pull the handbrake.

"But it continued to roll down at speed and eventually crashed into a bollard and a bench on the pavement.

"If I had left the paper shop just 30 seconds later I could have been hit."
