The Sheerness Times Guardian turned to its younger readers when it came to designing a logo for its 150th anniversary year.

The Isle of Sheppey weekly marks the special landmark next year with a series of events.

Primary schools across the island were asked to take part by getting pupils to design something they thought represented Sheppey and the paper.

Most entries included the £100m Sheppey Crossing, which opened last year, sheep and the Sheerness clock tower.

The top 10 were chosen by editor Matt Ramsden and published in the paper for readers to vote for their favourite with an entry from eight-year-old Sean Coldwell declared the winner

The nine runners-up all received a digital camera for their classes while Sean scooped a laptop computer for his school.

The design has been enhanced at the Kent Messenger's Larkfield head office and will be published on the front of the Times Guardian throughout 2008.

Matt said: "When we were thinking about an anniversary logo, we couldn't think of anything better than getting Sheppey youngsters involved. The response we have had from the schools and parents has been fantastic.

"Young Sean's design will be proudly displayed throughout 2008 with his byline. Next year promises to be a vintage one for the Times Guardian where we will continue to get readers involved in this very special anniversary."
