More than 100 journalists have been killed in 2007, the World Association of Newspapers said in its half-year report on press freedom worldwide.
One hundred and six journalists died on duty in 28 countries, 45 of them killed in Iraq, where 150 media workers have lost their lives since 2003. The number of journalists killed in 2007 is approaching the record of 110 deaths last year.


Joe Calzaghe's world title fight was good news for the South Wales Argus, where world champ Joe is a columnist.
The link with Calzaghe saw Argus sports writer Michael Pearlman being interviewed by American network HBO and broadcast ahead of the fight, coast to coast, to an audience of millions. And the paper was with him when he was given a special award by Prince Charles in a ceremony to honour the champ after the bout on November 4.


The funeral has taken place of former Northern Echo chief photographer John Forbes.
John, who died aged 85, served his time as a cabinet maker and served in the RAF during the Second World War, using his skill with wood to repair Mosquito bombers. Tributes were paid to the man who was recognised as "one of the old school", very interested in life, people and events.


The Hull Daily Mail has uncovered alarming evidence of how insurance companies are treating local people in the wake of the summer floods there.

A regional journalist has taken to the skies in a thrill-seeking experience with the winner of a newspaper competition.
Reporter Angela Knight, accompanied daredevil Grahaeme Bastable, winner of the St Albans and Harpenden Review Maltings Man award, as he took part in a flying challenge aimed at raising money for charity. Angela’s experience was captured on video and can be seen at watfordobserver.co.uk.
