Newspaper company Active Media has launched a new monthly paper.
The Tees Valley Standard has a print run of 15,000 across the region and will focus solely on covering positive local news.
It is being launched by former regional newspaper advertising executive, Maria Smith, who said: "There's always a positive way of reporting a story. In terms of frontpage news we would never carry anything like Three Die in Smash or Baby on Deathbed. Never will that happen."
John Giddings, a former editor of the Western Mail, has died aged 95.
He joined the newspaper in 1947 having served with the Royal Army Pay Corps during the Second World War, becoming editor in 1965.
Former Western Mail executive John Cosslett said his colleague was "acutely conscious of the importance of the Western Mail in Welsh life" and should be commended for his work as editor.
