£1m print investment for island media group

The publisher of Orkney Today and The Orcadian is investing £1m in new printing equipment to allow the production of all its titles to come in-house.

Orkney Media Group has bought a new press and platesetter to bring Orkney Today - currently printed in Dingwall - to Orkney.

The move will also allow the group's magazine, Living Orkney, to be printed there with all its other titles.

In May this year the owners of Orkney's two weekly titles merged, forming new company Orkney Media Group Limited.

The two newspapers are still run independently with separate editorial teams, but the group decided it made financial sense to bring all of its printing in-house.

Managing director Sinclair Robertson told holdthefrontpage: "Firstly, it will ensure money is not going out of the business to pay someone else.

"Secondly it will give us more control, and thirdly we have half-a-dozen print staff and we want to make sure they have as much work to do as possible."

Alongside its newspaper interests, Orkney Media Group has a commercial printing operation which handles magazines and work for local council, transport companies, hotels and other island businesses.
