Freelance's book shares top tips for journalists thinking of going it alone

A former regional press journalist who went freelance after her twin daughters were born has written a book sharing her top tips for other writers thinking of going it alone.

Linda Jones worked as a staffer on titles such as the Wolverhampton Express & Star, Worcester News and Sunday Sun before setting up her own business, and now runs commercial copywriting and PR company Passionate Media.

Her new book is called The Greatest Freelance Writing Tips in the World, and draws on her own experiences to answer questions such as 'can I afford to go freelance?'

Linda said: "My approach is that you have to recognise you are running a business from day one of your freelance writing career, so you have to get yourself organised with how to ensure you get paid, have a sound knowledge of media law and a grasp of how to market yourself effectively."

Linda was commissioned to write the book by publisher The Greatest in the World after her company began looking after its PR interests.

The publisher has produced a series of books under the brand, ranging from tips on gardening to etiquette, and Linda was delighted when they accepted her pitch.

She said: "The title is light-hearted as it's part of a much wider series, but I can definitely say the tips have worked for me… that's why they're the best in the world."

She added: "I know the market is shrinking and it can be tough for a freelance journalist, but if you have the right work ethic and skills you can and will make it.

"Of course at the end of the day you are in competition with each other, but freelances should support each other.

"The tips in the book are not trade secrets but more common sense, covering subjects such as making sure your pitch is as good as it can be, researching your market and getting paid on time."

  • Linda's book The Greatest Freelance Writing Tips in the World is out now, and a book launch is being held on October 18 at Passionate Media's Cannock offices.

The event will also raise money for the Talking Newspaper for the Blind in Stafford and Stone.
