Editor receives death threat in the post

The editor of the Andersonstown News in Belfast has received a death threat in the post.

A bullet wrapped in a letter with the name, address and car registration of editor Robin Livingstone was sent to UTV.

According to the National Union of Journalists similar threats were issued against a number of Sinn Fein members.

The threat claimed to be from the Red Hand Defenders, and follows a number of recent threats against media targets.

NUJ General Secretary Jeremy Dear called for police action.

He said: "We condemn utterly such threats. It is vital the PSNI act to protect those under threat and that politicians from all parties deliver a clear message in defence of media freedom and the right of journalists to work free from such threats.

"News organisations themselves must not only condemn these threats but show their commitment to speaking out against these outrageous attempts to silence and censor Northern Ireland's media."

Andersonstown News managing director Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has said the threat was "a clear attack on free speech".

The Andersonstown News is published twice a week by Belfast Media Group.
