Examiner reporter completes charity trek

A reporter from the Huddersfield Daily Examiner has completed a 25-mile walk across the Pennine and Peak District countryside to raise money for the NSPCC.

Barry Gibson, (28), was among hundreds of walkers who took part in the Hike Against Cruelty to Kids event, completing the route in nine hours and 45 minutes.

He said: "Bits of the walk were quite difficult, particularly Black Hill in the Peak District where several hundred walkers had to walk single file and it was a little bit treacherous underfoot.

"A few people were tripping and falling over and I went over on my ankle but thankfully nothing snapped."

The walkers took a circular route, starting and finishing at Hade Edge in West Yorkshire, and Barry collected more than £300 in sponsorship from friends, family and colleagues to add to the £75,000 fundraising total.

The experienced walker also completed a 50-mile trail from Melrose in southern Scotland to Wooler in Northumberland in November, and next week plans to tackle the Dales Way, an 80-mile route from Ilkey to Windermere.

During his latest hike he also interviewed fellow walkers along the way, and once he'd completed the trek he had to grab his notebook again to get a few quotes from the organisers.

Barry said: "Doing both the walking and reporting on the walk was more taxing than I imagined!"

Barry's sponsorship page is still active. If you would like to donate go to www.justgiving.com/barrygibson
