Death of one of the last 'old-school' journalists

Former Derby Evening Telegraph journalist Arthur Satchwell has died after a long illness.

The 76-year-old was a well-respected journalist who had worked for the Daily Mail as a reporter and senior sub-editor in the 1960s before joining the Evening Telegraph team.

During the 1970s and 1980s he was the newspaper's crown court reporter and a columnist.

Gordon Wilson, night editor at the Evening Telegraph, said Arthur was one of the last "old-school" journalists who would be remembered particularly for writing the Derbeian's Diary page.

He said: "He used to refuse to use a typewriter and handed in all his pieces hand-written.

"Arthur was a real hard-nosed reporter, a master of brevity in writing, but he was lovely to everyone he met."

Chris Ward, the Evening Telegraph's commercial features editor, also worked with Arthur.

He said: "Arthur was a real character - one of the old school. He will be fondly remembered by many of the readers and the people he worked with."
