The Western Morning News has raised more than £150,000 for charity after organising a mammoth charity walk.

Over the past four weeks an array of volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities have joined the Western Morning News Great South West Walk, tackling parts of the 630-mile route to raise sponsorship cash.

Money has also been raised from corporate sponsor donations, daily auctions, two golf days and donations from member of public, and the funds raised are to be divided between the RNLI, Macmillan Cancer Support, and Wooden Spoon, a charity which helps disadvantages children.

Alan Qualtrough, editor of the WMN, said: "It was a resounding success and we say a huge thank you to everyone who took part."

Managing director of Northcliffe Media, which owns the Western Morning News, Michael Pelosi, said he was delighted to be able to be a part of the campaign.

He said: "The campaign is marvellous. It shows great community support and what our newspapers and media businesses can do by bringing the community together and walking for great causes."

In continuation of the charity event, a further £3,500 was raised for the Great South West Walk at a gala evening to mark the end of the epic fundraising campaign.

The money was raised namely by an auction which saw a signed World Cup rugby shirt from England player Lawrence Dallaglio, as well as signed Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield United football shirts, go under the hammer.

WMN reporter Helen Collis, who helped cover the charity event and attended the gala evening, said: "The auction raised a staggering amount of money and everybody had a great time."
