Festival feat sees Leader produce Welsh langauge editions all week

Not many daily newsrooms can contemplate bringing out an extra daily extra edition - in a different language - but that's what NWN Media title the Evening Leader did for the biggest annual cultural festival in Wales.

The news team based in Mold, North Wales, brought out a Welsh language fourth edition every day for a week.

The special edition of the evening title, which usually sells in Wrexham, Flintshire and Chester, was published specifically for sale at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in Mold, as up to 200,000 visitors enjoyed music, dance, drama, arts and crafts over eight days.

The National Eisteddfod has been an annual event for nearly 130 years, although its roots go back to the 12th century. It is a week in the year when "Welshness" can be celebrated.

Evening Leader editor-in-chief Barrie Jones said: "As the Eisteddfod was on our doorstep this year we thought that the least we could do was to produce some content in the Welsh language every day for the huge numbers of visitors to the area from all over Wales.

"It was certainly a challenge but we do have some Welsh speaking staff and the Eisteddfod generates plenty of news stories.

"Although we are usually an English language publication we thought that during this week we would tailor a newspaper specifically for an Eisteddfod audience with parts of it in the language of the event."
