Web surge after Lincs flood crisis

The Grimsby Telegraph is celebrating a surge in internet stats, with 96,361 visitors recording 2.8m page views last month in the wake of the region’s recent flooding.

The week the floods hit North East Lincolnshire, the news team worked around the clock, posting newsflashes, pictures and videos as they happened at www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk

The local community also made use of the site, sharing vital information.

Four slideshows of floods pictures – originated by the telegraph and by readers – were viewed 13,363 times. The flood videos, including those created by readers, also proved to be compelling viewing.

Overall, the number of visitors for June is up 13 per cent on May, and the number of page views up by 32.3 per cent.

Meanwhile, the popularity of the newly-launched www.sportstelegraph.co.uk is also growing, with readers regularly logging on to read blogs, take part in forum chats and view all the latest sporting news and statistics.

It had 10,951 visitors in June, making 119,340 page views – up by 43 per cent on the previous four weeks.

Editor Michelle Lalor said: “As well as being able to quickly update our website with vital and fast-changing information for online readers, www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk also proved to be vital for information sharing, with head teachers posting messages about schools being closed and others advising drivers of the best routes around town.

“It was an extraordinary time, and brought our staff and its readers together more strongly than ever before.

“Not only that, we also posted breaking news about a murder trial, two missing teenagers, a knife attack and much more! It was a busy week.”
