Reporter drops 13,000ft in 'one of the greatest moments' of his life

A trainee reporter from the Midweek Herald has plummeted 13,000ft with the Red Devils to raise £600 for charity.

Matthew Low completed a tandem skydive to raise money for the Jubilee Sailing Trust, which helps integrate people of all physical abilities through the challenge and adventure of sailing.

The avid Archant South West reporter said his greatest worry was who would cover the evening's council meeting if he didn't make it.

He said: "The idea of a sponsored, 13,000ft tandem skydive for charity seemed like a good one when I signed up. I'd always wanted to skydive and this was too good an opportunity to miss.

"The Red Devils team was so professional that my mind was at ease within moments. The dive was truly one of the greatest moments of my life, reaching 180mph as we dropped 5,000ft in 45 seconds.

  • Matthew added: "At 8,000ft, I opened the parachute and then, with a massive wrench upwards, we were slowly gliding above the fields and hamlets of Wiltshire with the most incredible views imaginable.

"I'm already planning my next jump and would recommend skydiving to everyone."

Matthew took part in the fundraiser from Netheravon Airfield near Salisbury.

Based in Southampton, the Jubilee Sailing Trust runs challenging cruises around the UK and across the Atlantic that enable people to focus on their strengths as part of a team and gain confidence in their own abilities.
