Speakers lined up for Glasgow media conference

The team behind the award-winning Evening Gazette website will join a senior BBC executive to talk about industry developments at the Society of Editors' annual Scottish conference in September.

The website for the Evening Gazette in Middlesbrough follows a groundbreaking partnership with the University of Teesside – and editor Darren Thwaites, with Andy Price from the university, will talk about how they are working together to develop multimedia content.

Atholl Duncan, BBC Scotland's head of news and current affairs, will describe the rapid changes in broadcasting which have shaped the corporation's new flagship headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow.

Glasgow Caledonian will welcome some of the country's top broadcasters and journalists September 7 and 8 in the university's Continuing Professional Development Centre, supported by the Caledonian Business School.

The line-up of speakers also includes Sir Christopher Meyer, Press Complaints Commission chairman; National Council for the Training of Journalists chief executive Joanne Butcher; Vicki Nash, director of Ofcom in Scotland and Elizabeth Cutting, media and communications advisor to the judiciary in Scotland.

Speaking at the conference dinner will be Brian Wilson, the former government minister who is also an experienced journalist.

Julian Calvert, chairman of the Society of Editors (Scotland) and lecturer in journalism at the university said: "Technology is changing rapidly and we want to explore the new skills which journalists will need to learn — and both the potential and the pitfalls which these developments can bring.

“The rapid pace of change, ranging from citizen journalism to podcasting, means that print and broadcast news is converging; the conference will reflect the challenges and great opportunities that this brings."
