Death of former newspaper owner and editor

Fred Butterworth, former owner and editor of the Prestwich and Whitefield Guide, has died aged 93.

His father, Walter, had founded the paper in 1921, and Fred took over in 1944, staying with the paper until 1989.

Originally a freesheet, Fred helped to deliver The Guide - now owned by Newsquest - around the town as a boy.
