Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown has agreed to be guest speaker for the annual lunch of The Journalists' Charity at the Savoy tomorrow.
Accepting the invitation, he said: "The charity helped over 160 former journalists last year, often sick and elderly, who have fallen on hard times, and I look forward to celebrating that hard work."


Associated Newspapers has launched the Mail eReader, an application to give Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday readers an easy-to-use electronic version of the newspaper.
The eReader project followed agreement by Microsoft and Associated Newspapers to work together to pioneer the technology in the UK. Interest in the application may see wider adoption within the Associated Newspapers’ group.
The eReader was built by a team comprising developers from Associated’s digital division – Associated Northcliffe Digital – and interactive media consultancy Conchango.


Regional press journalist and freelance true-life writer Pat Nurse has launched a new website to bring her features to a wider audience.
www.patnurse.com is a market-place for her work and also encourages readers to get in touch with their own real-life stories. Pat has more than 20 years working for local and national media and customers include a number of national and local newspapers and magazines.


Bridgestone is launching a Europe-wide search for the next generation of Motosport journalists, with finalists being taken to a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Europe to cover the GP2 series.
The competition is open to students between 18-30 years of age and currently studying at a European university or high school for the duration of 2007. Click here for more information.


John Whittingdale MP will provide insight from his perspective as chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport, as guest speaker at the Newspaper Society’s annual meeting, where he will cover topics such as the BBC, public advertising and editorial issues.
Mark Rix of Manchester Evening News and Dick Dodson of Telmar Europe will update members on the project to develop a multimedia audience currency for the regional press.
The meeting will be followed by the Annual Lunch, where the guest speaker will be Andrew Marr.
