Johnston closes Lincoln Chronicle

Johnston Press has closed the Lincoln Chronicle.

The free weekly, which had been part of Lincolnshire Newspapers, has ceased publication and its High Street offices will close at the end of March.

The title employed one journalist and five advertising staff, all of whom have been made redundant.

It is understood that the Chronicle had not been attracting enough advertising revenue to cover its costs.

Paul Robins, managing director of Lincolnshire Newspapers, announced in December that the company was considering closing the paper after a "detailed review".

A 90-day consultation period then began with affected staff.

Paul told HoldtheFrontPage: "We had a consultation period and agreed with staff that we would close it earlier."

Reader Travel staff based at the Lincoln office will move to Grantham next month.

The Lincolnshire Chronicle and General Advertiser was launched on January 4, 1833 and became the Lincoln Chronicle on February 10, 1983. It had distributed more than 42,000 copies every Thursday.

None of the group's other titles, which include the Boston Standard, Louth Leader, Horncastle News and Skegness Standard, are affected.
