Mark Thomas is to become the new editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, succeeding Jane Wolstenholme.

Currently deputy editor at the paper, the 50-year-old has worked for Trinity Mirror for ten years.

He will take up his new post on February 5.

He said: "The Liverpool Daily Post is a newspaper with a wonderful history and a great future ahead of it.

"Working with Jane Wolstenholme has been a privilege, and I am immensely proud to be succeeding her.

"She'll be a tough act to follow, but we have some major plans for the title as we move forward into the digital age, and there couldn't be a more exciting time to be taking the helm."

Mark (pictured) joined the Daily Post as assistant editor in 2003 and helped relaunch the title in 2004.

He began his career at weekly group Wirral Newspapers before moving to the Liverpool Echo, where he worked in various reporting roles.

He then joined the Press Association as its regional correspondent before returning to the Echo in 1997.

"Mark brings with him an outstanding record of journalistic achievement and an instinctive understanding of this key brand.

"Having worked in recent times with Jane Wolstenholme on the development of the title Mark is well placed to build on the successful foundation that Jane has built."

It was announced in October that Jane would leave the Daily Post to work as an author and PR manager. She has secured a two-book deal with Simon and Schuster.
