Derby MP Bob Laxton is promising to take the Evening telegraph's Anything to Declare campaign to Westminster.
The campaign was launched just before Christmas after it was revealed that former Derby City Council leader Maurice Burgess had a conviction for child abuse when he was elected to the authority in 1994. It calls for a change in the law to make it obligatory for election candidates to declare any convictions in their nomination forms, and for councils to verify these statements through police checks if the individuals are elected.
