Newsquest sees video content produced across the group

Video clips on Newsquest websites were viewed more than 45,000 times in September, with all 14 of its publishing centres now producing video content, the group has said.

Since June more than 70 of its journalists have received video training by staff from parent-company Gannett's broadcasting division, and the group says it is the first UK regional publisher to have journalists at each of its centres producing the clips.

Group editorial manager Margaret Strayton said the group had quickly and quietly transformed itself into a multi-media company.

She said: "Like most other publishers we have accepted that multi-media, embracing all distribution vehicles for our journalism – print, digital, video, podcasts, mobile phones - is where the future lies. It is all of these; not one of these.

"To fully embrace all of this we set about changing the mindset of print journalists and trained them how to tell a story in a multi-media fashion, making the best of the web, video, podcasts as well as print.

"Newsquest, while confident about the long-term future of newspapers, is positioning itself for growth as part of the multi-media information sector."

Newsquest titles producing video clips now include The Northern Echo, Southern Daily Echo, Oxford Mail, Colchester Gazette, Bournemouth Echo, Hereford Times, Falmouth Packet, Bolton News, South Wales Argus, Somerset County Gazette and News Shopper.

The first title to go live with a video bulletin service was the Telegraph & Argus in Bradford, which sent reporter Sunita Bhatti on a three-week Diploma in Video Journalism training course run by the Press Association at Howden.
