Video news brings readers the headlines in a flash

Readers of the Express & Star are being treated to an overview of the front page news from the West Midlands title as part of a new online video bulletin service.

Assistant editor Roy Williams had the camera turned on him on Tuesday after news staff put the last of 12 editions to bed.

He provided a three-minute snapshot of what was making the news from its Birmingham edition, which hits the streets at around 11.30am, through to its Sandwell edition which is available from 3pm.

Sports editor Tim Walters also got in on the act, giving a review of the back pages and an analysis of the back pages.

It could soon become a regular service to give readers a taster of the print paper and news from across the wider region.

  • Roy talks through the day's headlines
  • Roy said: "It occured to us that every day we provide BBC local TV with our front pages, but we don't do anything like that ourselves.

"We waited until the City Final was out before we did it and did it as a review rather than a preview, which we might also try to see which works better."

The Express & Star has launched the video news service ahead of a planned relaunch of its website www.expressandstar.com later this month, after the popularity of the service on its World Cup site www.star-backhome.co.uk.

  • Tim reviews the back pages
  • The paper has enlisted the help of Richard McCarthy from the Press Association to film the video segments.

So far a film from Birmingham Airport, giving the verdict of passengers during the terror alert, and an interview with the family of local army heroine have also gone online.

Roy said: "What we've shown is that, given that you've got the right people and equipment, it is not that difficult to do."
