A council has been urged by environmentalists to do more to reduce its energy consumption after a local newspaper probe revealed that its bill rose by 17 per cent last year.
Using the Freedom of Information Act, the Blytth and Wansbeck News Post Leader found that Northumberland County Council spent more than £4.4m on energy in the 2005-06 financial year – an increase of more than £650,000 on the previous 12 months.
