Newsquest to close West End Mail

Newsquest is to close the West End Mail 18 months after it was launched.

The free weekly paper had been distributed to more than 30,000 homes in the West End of Glasgow, but the company says it has failed to attract enough advertising revenue.

Its last edition will be published on Wednesday.

The title has four staff, including editor Ross McKay and reporter Maureen McKendry, and talks are currently being held about the possibility of redeployment.

Tim Blott, managing director of Newsquest Strathclyde, said: "We launched the title in July 2005 and it was well received within the community, but sadly, despite nearly 18 months of trading, it has failed to attract sufficient advertising revenue.

"Consultations on redundancy are currently taking place with the four staff who are affected. Where possible they will be offered alternative positions within the company."
