Weekend reports suggest that Newsquest's American owners Gannett could be prepared to sell the regional newspaper company.

Newsquest publishes more than 200 local newspapers, including 18 daily titles, around the UK.

The Sunday Express says Gannett is set to review Newsquest, a move that could lead to its disposal for up to £1.5bn.

Credit Suisse is expected to advise the American company on a review, according to the report. The paper said the review had been prompted by an increasingly tough market.

Meanwhile, Trinity Mirror is expected to reveal the results of a strategic review into its own business, which commentators feel could result in the company being broken up.

Rothschild bank has been looking at operating models and structure since August to find the best way to take the group forward and to "capture opportunities", following "increasing challenges" faced by the industry. The results are due to be announced on Thursday following a Wednesday board meeting.

One option is to separate the regionals division, which publishes some 240 local and regional newspapers across the UK, from the nationals, which includes the Daily Mirror and the People.

Tomorrow, Johnston Press – a potential bidder for some or all of Trinity Mirror's regionals - will be providing an industry update on its own affairs.

Earlier this year, Daily Mail & General Trust abandoned plans to sell its regional newspapers when it pulled out of selling Northcliffe after deciding the company was a better prospect than first thought.
