Press and Star's yob fight results in more arrests

The Guernsey Press and Star's Shop a Yob campaign has resulted in two more arrests.

Earlier this month the paper began printing stills from CCTV cameras, and two of its latest featured pictures have now won a result for the police.

Crime prevention officer PC Bernie English told the Press and Star that police had received two calls to the Crimestoppers line as a result, with both callers giving the same details about the suspects.

He said: "It's fair to say that they probably wouldn't have been arrested if it wasn't for the Guernsey Press and its readers."

The latest arrests relate to hoodie-wearing youths caught on CCTV smashing a window in the grounds of a police station.

PC English hailed the success of the new anti-crime initiative, Shop a Yob, which has previously resulted in six people being arrested and four being charged for a burglary.

He said: "It's been a fantastic initiative and something that we have got to continue doing.

"I'm pleased that we have found a way to detect crimes that would probably have gone undetected unless we took the action we did."

Editor Richard Digard said an increase in low-level crime had left residents perturbed, and so the campaign was launched to engage readers in helping to solve incidents in which police had run out of other leads.
