Chronicle's Polish edition to become a weekly

The Reading Chronicle is to publish a Polish edition of its newspaper every week after the success of last month's trial edition.

The Kronika Reading has the first seven broadsheet pages in Polish – including the front page – and the paper hopes to increase the number of translated pages in the coming months.

The move is an attempt to strengthen community cohesion in Reading, while helping to build new audiences.

Editor Simon Jones said: "It is important, more than ever, for editors to think about reaching out to new audiences.

"The success of Kronika Reading has shown that Poles have a real desire to get immersed in local issues and that is very encouraging in terms of helping to build community cohesion. We have been delighted with the feedback from our trial edition, which has paved the way for us to go weekly."

In October the title was one of the first local newspapers in Britain to break new ground by publishing a foreign language version of the paper.

The new paper will be distributed across the region and also targeted at the Polish community via Polish shops and clubs.

The Federation of Poles in Great Britain say Reading is one of the major population centres for Polish people, along with London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Southampton and Slough. The strength of the local economy in Reading is seen locally as one of the major attractions for the Polish community.

  • The Southern Daily Echo in Southampton published a supplement targeted at the growing Polish community in its circulation area.
