All-action news staff take on series of stunts

All-action editorial staff have been showing their mettle in different parts of the country, taking part in a series of stunts – and then telling readers all about it.

Bridgwater Mercury reporter Andy Whelan joined the Red Devils Army parachute display team this week to leap out of a plane in aid of the BIBIC charity, which raises money for brain injured children.

It was a tall order for 6ft 4in Andy, who was two inches taller than the regulation maximum height for a tandem jump.

He said: "This is an experience of a lifetime and a fantastic opportunity to raise money for some very special children."

Meanwhile Action Allie – Alison White at the News Shopper – experienced an aerobatic display… from the cockpit of one of the aircraft.

She, too, was acquainted with a parachute, but unlike Andy would prefer not to use it.

After "one of the best experiences" of her life, she said: "We did my first loop-the-loop in an aeroplane, which felt amazing, and beat any rollercoaster ride I have ever been on.

"As we turned upside down I felt weightless but as we came back down I could feel the G-force in my stomach.

"The pilot did some wingovers, which are turns at more than 90 degrees, which gave me an interesting different perspective of the scenery below.

"We spun 360 degrees and then repeated this really quickly, an exhilarating experience to say the least."

The Lynn News appeal for the Hunstanton Lifeboat received a boost with photographer Paul Tibbs cycling the Pedders Way in Norfolk.

Two broken chains and a puncture failed to stop him completing the trek in less than five-and-a-half hours.

He told readers of The News: "It was pretty eventful but well worth it. At the time I said I’d never do it again, but I could if I had to!"

Paul raised more than £750.
