A campaign to protect quality journalism is holding two public debates later this month.

The Journalism Matters campaign, from the National Union of Journalists, is hosting the events, which will be attended by key media experts and commentators.

The Bristol NUJ branch will be holding a public meeting and debate on Friday September 22, when speakers will include MP David Drew, the NUJ’s Jeremy Dear and president Chris Morley, and South West TUC regional secretary Nigel Costley.

The event will include a short film made by NUJ students at the University of the West of England, featuring vox-pops of people in Bristol giving their views on local and national journalism and why they see it as important.

The meeting starts at 7pm at the Bristol Watershed Media Centre.

The NUJ London branch is also planning a Journalism Matters debate.

This will be held on the evening of Tuesday October 10 at the Guardian Newsroom in London. Planned speakers include Chris Mullin MP, Roy Greenslade and Hugh Muir.
