Apology as football manager misquote turns players into 'nonentities'

A newspaper has apologised in print after misquoting Wolves manager Mick McCarthy in a post-match press conference.

The Wolverhampton Express & Star published a back page report under the headline "Non-entities", quoting the manager as saying: "There were one or two players out there who were a nonentity."

What he actually said was: "I thought there were one or two of them running on empty towards the end."

Mick McCarthy reacted angrily after being misquoted following a defeat by Preston North End.

He told the Wolves official website: "I would never say anything like that about my players. I am always loyal to them and I'm very disappointed that this has happened."

The newspaper published an apology in its next available edition.

Sports editor Tim Walters said: "This was a case of 'there for the grace of God go I', and a genuine mistake. We put it right as soon as we could."

The football club was pleased the paper acknowledged its error, also admitting: "After all, we can all make mistakes."

On page 37 of the City Final edition the apology read: "Saturday's edition of the Express & Star inaccurately quoted Wolves boss Mick McCarthy as saying one or two of his players were 'nonentities' in Friday's defeat against Preston.

"The boss actually said they were 'running on empty'. We apologise for the error."
