Black & White Publishing is encouraging journalists to carve out a successful second career for themselves as authors.
The Edinburgh-based publishing house increased its turnover by 20 per cent in the last year and attributes much of that growth to the success it has achieved with books penned by working journalists.
The true crime series ‘Vendetta’, ‘The Last Godfather’ and ‘Murder Capital’ by Reg McKay - regular crime columnist for the Daily Record - has proved popular and has sold through national book chains and supermarkets, while Dundee-based journalist Sandy McGregor’s ‘The Law Killers’ was recently number one on the Scottish bestsellers list for ten consecutive weeks.


Entries are being invited for a competition to recognise journalists’ work on coverage of lung cancer.
The Tempus Journalism Awards entries can comprise features, commentaries or programmes on lung cancer, and must be received by September 28. Categories include Best Medical Article, Best Consumer Article and Best Broadcast Piece. More details can be obtained from Amelia Baio on 020 7357 8187.


Guardian Media Group’s television channel, Channel M, has launched a new programme for Manchester City fans, Inside MCFC.

A former Daventry Express reporter has won a creative writing competition run by a local radio station.
Amy Olive scooped first prize in the Radio Northampton contest, in which she wrote about a Portuguese woman working in the UK.


Journalists are still being asked to provide their memories and anecdotes of the industry for an oral history being prepared by the National Union of Journalists.
The project, being co-ordinated by Liverpool John Moores University, is to celebrate the union’s 100th anniversary.
