Journalist-turned-author tells story of mother wrongly accused of murder

A former regional press journalist-turned-author has seen her work go on sale across the world, after penning a book about the Angela Cannings case.

Megan Lloyd Davies, who began her career on the Exeter Express and Echo, gave up her job at The Mirror to ghost write the life story of the woman who was charged with murder and spent 18 months in prison after she and her husband Terry lost their third infant in ten years.

Angela was exonerated in December 2003, having had her conviction declared unsafe by the Court of Appeal.

Megan, (34), covered the story extensively during her time at The Mirror and began writing Against All Odds: The Angela Cannings Story after being approached by an agent.

She said: "I got to know Angela and she had always wanted to write a book. I spent hours with her and also did a lot of background research on the technical detail.

"It was very important to her that it wasn't just her story but that the book told how she wasn't just one blip in the system and that there are many families who are wrongly accused of abuse."

Megan began writing the book while still at The Mirror, dividing her time between London and Devon, but decided to quit her job at the national newspaper to work full-time on the project.

It is now on sale in Holland, Italy and Sweden as well as the UK.

Megan has also previously worked for the Bristol Evening Post and Western Daily Press and is currently working freelance for magazines, with two other possible ghost writing projects also underway.

She said: "In some ways it was easier than I thought to write the book and much more difficult in others.

"It was quite emotional. As a ghost writer you have to imagine yourself as that person and it was an exhausting process."

  • Against All Odds: The Angela Cannings Story, published by Time Warner Books, is available in hardback priced £16.99. ISBN: 0316733040.
