News staff take to the water to raise charity cash

Staff at free weekly paper The Docklands have raised more than £1,000 for charity after fielding a team in the area's annual dragon boat race.

Led by sales manager Jackie Ross and editor Amanda Patterson, the team donned waterproofs and rowed against fierce opposition from 11 other boats at the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre.

Jackie beat time on the drum while Amanda joined the sales and editorial team of oarsmen in a determined effort by the race first-timers.

Jackie said: "We got wetter and wetter as the day went on.

"There were only six rowers but we were determined not to finish last and managed a final push to finish in 11th place."

The sailors raised £1,140 for the John Grooms disability charity and the money will go towards providing residential and nursing care homes, wheelchair accessible housing, training and brain injury rehabilitation.

Meanwhile in Norwich, Archant colleagues from the Evening News took part in a dragon boat race on Whitlingham Broad.
