Swift turnaround on Elton John special secures newspaper sales boost

The news team at The Argus faced a real challenge when they covered Elton John's concert on its patch.

He performed to 17,000 fans in his only afternoon concert of the tour - but when he came off the stage at 8.15pm there was a wrap, front page and eight-page supplement waiting to be filled for next morning.

It was the first time a wrap had been produced by the Brighton paper since the West Pier fire in 2003.

Photographers were only allowed into Sussex County Cricket Ground for Elton's first song and had to make it very snappy.

The editorial team managed to pull it off thanks to a lot of forward planning and good work on the day.

Jo Davis was waiting back at Argus House to sub Claire Truscott's copy, filed from a laptop from Row Y of the concert.

Deputy editor Pat Lewis said: "It is a measure of the team's professionalism and talent that everything came together so well.

"Good preparation and organisation by the news desk, picture desk and subs helped to ensure the day ran on rails.

"Claire's copy was well written and to length, while Jo did a magnificent job putting it all together against the clock. Photographic faced an especially challenging time and did brilliantly."

Claire said: "When the crowd all stood up to dance along it became a little difficult to type away on my lap, especially when the battery got low. It was a relief when it all came together."

The snappers had a speedy finish when they were allowed in for Elton's first song only.

Picture editor Richard Taylor said: "We ended up with 200 great pictures all taken in such a short space of time and it made the supplement look fantastic."

Snapper Darren Cool, who was in the stage pit, said: "Luckily the song was about six minutes long because we needed that time to get pictures of Elton and of the crowd. I quite enjoyed it though, it was cool to be up that close to such a big star."

When the “Elton edition” hit the stands, sales on the day increased by 2,266 copies (+7.4 per cent) compared to the previous Monday and +2 per cent against last year.

Newspaper Sales Manager Ben Cartwright said: "A great result that was the culmination of hard work from people across several departments."
