Journalist clocks up the miles and the cash in epic bike ride

A journalist at the Cambridge Evening News has completed a gruelling 1,040-mile cycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groats - helping to raise almost £1 for every mile he clocked up.

Entertainments writer Nik Shelton and his friend James Kennedy took two weeks to complete the journey, riding through three countries, crossing three suspension bridges and travelling on four ferries in their race to the finish line.

Nik chose to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief and community radio station 209 Radio, and said the trip was a "pretty amazing experience".

  • He said: "It all started with a few idle e-mails about things we wanted to do before we die. Swimming with dolphins? Going to Disneyland? Stuff that. Both of us decided we wanted to travel the length of this fair island by bike.
