Paper hopes to score sales boost with special 'England Star'

As World Cup fever swept England on Saturday, staff at the Evening Star in Ipswich showed they are not ones to miss an opportunity - putting together a special late edition with coverage of England's first match against Paraguay.

Editor Nigel Pickover and his team changed five pages of Saturday's lunchtime Evening Star as well as the masthead, to bring readers the 'England Star'.

Around 3,000 copies of the paper were printed shortly after the match - which kicked off at 2pm - and were on sale by 6pm.

Early indications are that the special edition sold well.

Deputy editor Mike Pennock said: "We decided to take advantage of the early kick-off as this was our one opportunity to publish on the same day and try to get some sales out of the World Cup.

"We included a match report, pictures and reaction from people watching in bars to give it a local flavour and beat the Sundays."
