Special edition marks footballing glory on Teesside

Football glory for Middlesbrough FC is also leading to sales success at the Evening Gazette, which marked the club's dramatic UEFA Cup semi-final win with a special edition.

The club's astonishing comeback was a magnificent climax to what the paper dubbed a 'Week of Destiny', and after Friday's morning conference was pulled forward to 7am, the first six pages were given over to match coverage and reaction in addition to full sports coverage.

An extra 13,000 copies were also printed to cope with expected demand.

  • 'Mission Impossible 2'
  • The club's win followed an almost carbon copy quarter final, which saw Boro overturn a three-goal deficit against FC Basle in the second leg at the Riverside stadium.

The Gazette had reacted to this by adding the first five pages to a comprehensive sports coverage, and an extra 8,000 copies were printed.

Despite this some outlets still sold out and back copies were advertised in-paper for readers who had missed out on a memorable edition.

The club's 'Week of Destiny' also included a defeat against West Ham in the semi-final of the FA Cup, and the first leg of the now historic UEFA semi, and its path to glory was charted with daily stories in the Gazette.

  • After the first comeback
  • Now news staff are busily planning the final in Eindhoven, when a posse of sports writers, reporters, photographers - and a video journalist who will get footage for Gazettelive, the paper's website - will head out.

Deputy editor Alan Sims said: "It looked like everything could fall flat when Boro lost the first leg of the UEFA semi, 1-0 against Steaua Bucharest, and then were dumped out of the FA Cup by West Ham on Sunday.

"So when they went another two goals down at the Riverside in the second leg of the UEFA semi, leaving them a 3-0 deficit to overcome yet again, it looked like the dream was over.

"Amazingly they mounted another great escape and scored four goals in what everyone on Teesside feels is the greatest game in the club's history."
