News & Star sportsman takes on ice rink challenge

With the Winter Olympics in full swing, Carlisle News & Star reporter Peter Edwards thought there could be no better time to try his hand - and lose his feet - at curling.

The reporter joined in a beginners' session at Lockerbie ice rink and found out just how much skill is required to keep your balance, let alone slide the stones accurately.

But despite enjoying his first attempt at curling, Peter doesn't expect to be competing for Team GB at the Vancouver games in four years' time.

He said: "I don't think I'll be taking it up - I'm probably lacking the concentration that's needed.

"Curling was a lot more technical than I thought it would be.

"It was good to do it with dedicated curlers because their enthusiasm really rubs off on you. But I think I'll stick to running and football and remain an enthusiastic bystander of curling."
