Staff at the York Evening Press were today demanding answers after being told that cuts could be on the way when a review at their title is completed.
The Newsquest paper is one of the strongest in the group but it is feared that more than a dozen editorial staff could lose their jobs as a result of current trading conditions.
All areas will be covered in the review, including editorial.
No figures have been announced and Newsquest has declined to comment.
But HoldtheFrontPage understands that union reps met late last week with editor Kevin Booth and the acting MD Phil Radburn, who is taking on Liz Page’s duties after she left the company. Further meetings were expected to take place today and later this week.
The newspaper currently publishes four editions daily, which comprise a Selby edition, the Final (York early) edition, a County edition covering Malton and Ryedale, and the Late Final (York). The current set-up leaves room for edition cuts on a printing press which is shared by The Northern Echo.
The weekly Malton Gazette & Herald is also produced at the York Evening Press HQ.
No one at the National Union of Journalists was prepared to comment before a statement is released later today, except to say staff would be worried about potential job losses, changes in working conditions and quality of the newspaper’s content.
