News in brief

A village newsagent succeeded in winning a 1,477 per cent increase in sales of the Exeter-based Express & Echo following the success of trans-Atlantic rowers Justin Adkin, his 23-year-old brother Robert and their cousins Martin Adkin and James Green.
The newsagent in Beer village, where the family comes from, sold 122 copies in the wake of their triumph – up 113 copies.

Journalists at the Bristol Evening Post and Western Daily Press held a mock funeral to symbolise what they believe could be the death of quality regional newspapers.
More than 30 journalists' jobs are to be cut over the next few weeks at the two papers as part of owner Northcliffe Newspapers' Aim Higher cost-saving programme. Western Daily Press FoC Paul Breeden said: "We called on the services of the Grim Reaper today not because we think our titles are about to collapse but because we fear Northcliffe's proposals are the beginning of the end for quality daily newspapers in the region.”

The Press Association has agreed a deal with the BBC to supply video footage to the local TV in the West Midlands for a nine-month pilot.
PA's Birmingham bureau will supply local stories in video throughout the day, seven days a week. Footage will include news, sport, and entertainment and will be used by the BBC, alongside their own content, to produce ten-minute local news bulletins available on digital satellite and broadband.

Archant life has snapped up six London magazine titles from Metropolis Publishing to make it the biggest local magazine publisher in the capital.
The Resident, Grove, Westside, Angel and North are based in west and north London, while Rise is distributed south of the river. Together they distribute more than 250,000 copies.

A memorial service to celebrate the life and work of journalist John Timpson is to be held on February 22 at Norwich Cathedral.
He was a former Eastern Daily Press chief reporter and retained close ties with the area, writing several books on Norfolk in his later life. The event will be open to the public.

The News in Portsmouth has been congratulated by MPs for its campaign to win a particular medal for veterans of the Second World War Arctic convoys.
The Early Day Motion, so far signed by 32 MPs, “…welcomes the creation of the Arctic Star Emblem, which recognises the heroism of the veterans of the Merchant Navy, Royal Navy, RAF and Army who took part in the horrendous four-year Arctic Campaign during the Second World War.”
