Tsunami special put together by survivor

The Citizen marked a year since the Asian tsunami with a special edition written by features editor Victoria Temple, who was caught up in the Boxing Day disaster.

Gloucestershire journalist Victoria and her partner Andy Mann were on holiday in Sri Lanka and witnessed the destruction.

A year on, Victoria has looked back at events and reported on how money raised by readers - which totalled more than £270,000 - is being used to help rebuild the lives of survivors.

The special edition also included stories from survivors local to Gloucester, and told how an appeal to raise money was quickly mounted, with The Citizen teaming up with Unicef.

At the time Victoria quickly put together an account of the disaster, and told how she was awoken by a man shouting "The sea is coming! The sea is coming!"

In the special edition the journalist, who is now pregnant, shared her thoughts for the future.

She said: "It's hard to say for certain, but I think it may have changed me. It made me feel an impatience with life itself - a sense that life is too precious to waste and time is the only thing that we have that is any real value."
