Former Flintshire Chronicle reporter Gwynne Hughes has died, aged 80, after a long illness.

The well-known North Wales journalist worked at the Flintshire Chronicle's Mold office from the mid 1960s until he retired in 1990.

He started his career in journalism as a trainee reporter on the Wrexham Leader in 1942 before moving to Sandycroft to cover Deeside for the Flintshire Leader.

He joined The Chronicle in 1967 and was one of the reporters to cover Prince Charles' investiture in 1969.

Former Wrexham Leader editor Tony Lloyd said: "Gwynne was a popular figure with a wide circle of friends, both in his hometown of Wrexham and in Mold, where he worked for a number of years."
