The Sunday Herald is to switch formats from broadsheet to compact.

The Newsquest-owned title will appear in its new size for the fist time next Sunday.

Editor Richard Walker said the change would be to the size of the paper and not its content.

He said: "We will continue to produce first-class quality journalism and to build on our reputation for in-depth news reporting, the best international news coverage in Scotland, brilliant photography and excellent design.

"The compact format is becoming increasingly popular with readers and we believe it will allow us greater flexibility in the way that we present our news and features."

The Sunday Herald was launched in 1999, and was initially edited by Andrew Jaspan, who is now editor-in-chief of the Age in Melbourne, Australia.

Since its launch it has won a host of industry awards, including the Newspaper Society award for the highest sales increase of any daily, evening, or Sunday newspaper, three times. It now sells 58,140.
