Reporter scoops singing prizes at Gaelic festival

A reporter from the Press and Journal in Aberdeen has lived up to the newspaper's slogan "The Voice of the North", by winning three prizes in singing competitions at the Royal National Mod.

Eilidh Davies scooped the Kennedy-Fraser Cup for her Hebridean solo at the festival, which celebrates the Gaelic language and culture through music, dance, drama, arts and literature.

The 26-year-old singer and accomplished clarsach harp player also came runner-up in two other competitions.

It is the second time she has won a first prize singing at the Mod, having won the silver pendant at the 2000 event in Dunoon.

She said: "I am delighted with how this year has gone for me so far.

"I have been a runner-up in this competition before, but to win it is fantastic. I think it is an unusual competition because it is the only one with a piano accompaniment.
